The Wavecrest property is a unique natural and recreational resource at the edge of Half Moon Bay. At 206 acres, it is a large property that supports a diverse range of uses. PlaceWorks worked with the Peninsula Open Space Trust (POST), the property owner, to develop alternative conceptual land use plans for the property to retain and enhance Wavecrest’s habitat, agricultural land, and recreational assets. Alternatives included regional trail connections, a segment of the California Coastal Trail, an internal trail network, staging areas, wetland enhancement areas, agricultural areas, and a spectrum of recreational amenities.

PlaceWorks also completed the second phase of the Wavecrest trail design, which provides safe coastal access and bluff and dune restoration for a new park in Redondo Beach. Challenges included a patchwork site interlaced with parcels still in private ownership; significant erosion that must be stopped and repaired; and a difficult steep route down to the beach. The project required community outreach, conceptual design, and construction documents that protect ecologically sensitive areas, map invasive vegetation, and provide for accessibility while capitalizing on scenic views and unique features of this beautiful stretch of coastline. PlaceWorks also provided support for the project’s grantwriting and fundraising activity.
