PlaceWorks is leading a comprehensive update to Santa Rosa’s General Plan built on multi-faceted, meaningful engagement to help the community “bounce forward” to redesign physical and social structures damaged by the 2017 Tubbs Fire, impacts of COVID-19, and racial injustice, with the goal of becoming more resilient and cohesive than ever before. The four-year project commenced in Spring 2020 with a community-driven refinement of the project’s comprehensive Community Involvement Strategy to connect with all segments of the community, including those often excluded from civic processes. With the Community Involvement Strategy as a foundation, we’ve employed a nimble mix of high-touch and high-tech engagement tools and methods—a comprehensive project website, informational videos in English and Spanish, interactive online surveys, paper surveys, school-based projects included in local high school curriculums, in-person and virtual workshops and open houses, pop-up events—to reach community members with diverse backgrounds and points of view for each phase of the project completed to date.
