South Region High School No. 7 Health Risk Assessment

This proposed school fronted a major industrial corridor in Huntington Park. The HRA evaluated more than 60 sources of air toxics as well as facilities handling hazardous materials. Diesel particulate emissions from trains along the Alameda Corridor were also considered. We determined that the risk of impacts from accidental releases of hazardous materials was not significant. However, the risk of cancer from exposure to diesel particulate was excessive. With mitigation such as air system filtration to reduce indoor air concentrations and designing buildings that hinder the infiltration of outdoor air, occupants of the school would not be exposed to an unacceptable cancer risk.
