Bicycle and Pedestrian Count Database Project

PlaceWorks provided the Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) with an overview of count programs throughout the San Francisco Bay Area and several strategies for housing and sharing data. We surveyed municipalities, transportation agencies, and county government agencies in the nine-county region; researched nationwide practices for count databases; and explored opportunities to integrate “big data” sources such as Strava and other fitness-tracking apps. We grouped recommendations under three strategies—big data/subscription services, manual/automated counts, and a hybrid between them. The recommendations gave MTC a clear blueprint for improving bicycle and pedestrian count technology that responded to local and regional data needs. In fall 2017, MTC secured a Caltrans Sustainable Communities grant to pursue future improvements in count data infrastructure.
