Job Description:

PlaceWorks is seeking a Summer Intern for the Environmental Team in our Santa Ana Office. To be eligible for this internship, you must be enrolled in a graduate or undergraduate program related to civil engineering; transportation engineering; urban, regional, environmental, or natural resource planning. The ideal candidate has an interest in traffic engineering and transportation planning, and is passionate, energetic and engaged in using their skills for the betterment of communities and the environment. Under the guidance of a Project Manager, the Intern will support Environmental Team staff members with, and will acquire skills in, traffic, transportation and parking studies, and environmental analysis pursuant to CEQA and NEPA. This internship provides invaluable work experience and the opportunity to participate as a member of the Environmental Team; work alongside skilled professionals and leaders of the Company; and, build skills related to project management, data analysis and modeling, transportation planning and traffic engineering fundamentals, technical writing, and CEQA/NEPA compliance.

Responsibilities Include:

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Conducting traffic and transportation impact analyses (transit, vehicle, bicycle, and pedestrian), and parking demand studies for a wide array of projects using traffic analysis software (Syncro; Traffix/Vistro), and published manuals (HCM; CA MUTCD; Caltrans Highway Design Manual).
  • Gathering, analyzing, and modeling traffic and transportation data so it can be transformed into a technical report format per the CEQA/NEPA.
  • Conducting research and compiling data as required by the project.
  • Assisting with writing, formatting, and proof-reading technical sections of proposals, reports, and project documents with oversight from the project manager or other staff.
  • Generating succinct and informative presentations of technical results in both tabular and graphical formats.
  • Assisting other team members with performing site visits as needed.
  • Assisting with administrative project tasks to contribute to the successful completion of projects.


Ideal candidate will possess the following key qualifications:

  • A current student within 1 or 2 years of obtaining Bachelor’s degree or Master’s degree in civil engineering; transportation engineering; urban, regional, environmental, or natural resource planning; or related field.
  • Able to commit to a 12-week internship during the summer months.
  • Must be able to work at least 15 hours per week.
  • Strong technical writing, research, and analytical skills.
  • Strong verbal communication skills.
  • High attention to detail.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint).
  • Advanced skills with high-level functions in Excel.
  • Knowledge of planning and travel demand modeling programs and traffic analysis is a plus.
  • Demonstrated ability to multi-task with project work and meet stated deadlines.
  • Able to work independently and in a highly collaborative environment with other team members.
