Job Description:

PlaceWorks is seeking a full-time Associate Principal Landscape Architect to assist in leading the Design Team in the Berkeley Office. We are seeking a California Registered Landscape Architect with a portfolio of built and designed work in both the public and private realm, who has over 15 years of experience designing, directing, and managing complex public and private sector projects. Project experience should include master plans, concept design and construction documents for projects of all sizes, from design through construction. The ideal candidate is a professional who is passionate about landscape architectural design, creative, energetic, and is engaged in using their skills for the betterment of communities and the environment. The ideal candidate must be able to successfully manage projects, work products, and clients; lead and mentor team members; and, pursue marketing and business development opportunities. The Design Team works in a cross-disciplinary, collaborative environment with a strong emphasis on public landscape architecture. The project work of our Design Team spans Northern and Southern California, encompassing the full range of the practice from master planning and design guidelines to conceptual designs and construction documentation. We have a portfolio of built works including: large-scale master plans, parks, playgrounds, trails, open space, habitat restoration, urban streets, and plazas.

Responsibilities Include:

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Managing, overseeing, and coordinating all aspects of project management for landscape architecture projects of all sizes. Examples include, but are not limited to: proposal writing, contract management and negotiations, staffing, sub-consultant coordination, scheduling, design, budget control, client interaction, compliance, quality control, community outreach.
  • Writing, proofreading and formatting proposals, statements of qualifications, marketing material, and project documents.
  • Coordinating and conducting presentations at community workshops.
  • Representing the Company at interviews for jobs of all sizes.
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with clients, including public and private sector clients, community organizations, and other firms.
  • Leading marketing and business development efforts for landscape architecture, and design work throughout California.
  • Supervising and guiding staff in all areas of project management and technical skills, including development of construction documents for public and private bid.
  • Mentoring staff members and investing in their on-going training, goal-setting, and professional development.

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will possess the following key qualifications:

  • Strong and confident designer with a portfolio of built and designed works which demonstrate a high-level of design facility in a wide range of project types, budgets, and settings.
  • Comfortable and capable in a collaborative environment working with PlaceWorks urban designers, city and environmental planners, and landscape architects.
  • 15 years of project design and management experience.
  • 5 years of experience leading and managing design staff in a collaborative environment.
  • Registered landscape architect in California (or other state with the ability to obtain reciprocity).
  • Strong verbal communication skills. Proven ability to speak and present in front of groups and facilitate group discussions of all sizes.
  • Strong writing abilities.
  • Experience in attending project interviews and developing marketing proposals.
  • Demonstrated ability to work on multiple projects within budget and on schedule.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint).
  • Confident and fluid freehand drawing and graphic skills, both in loose conceptual sketches and refined renderings is strongly desired.
  • Proficiency using specialized applications is desirable, but not required and could include: Adobe Creative Suite, AutoCAD, Rhino, SketchUp, ArcGIS.
  • Previous experience with streetscape design work and transportation planning is a plus.
