Job Description:

PlaceWorks is seeking a full-time, entry-level professional in either landscape architecture/open space design and/or planning or urban design, to become part of the Design Team in our Berkeley Office. We are seeking individuals with approximately 2 – 3 years of professional experience. The ideal candidate is passionate, creative, energetic, and deeply committed to the design and planning profession, and is engaged in using their skills for the betterment of communities and the environment. Under the guidance of project managers and other senior staff, this position will assist project teams by applying planning/design knowledge and technical skills to contribute to the successful completion of projects at a variety of scales, often working concurrently on more than one project. The project work of our landscape architecture and urban design practice encompasses the full range of the practice from master planning and design guidelines to conceptual designs and construction documentation. We have a portfolio of built works including: parks, playgrounds, trails, habitat restoration, streets, and plazas.

Responsibilities Include:

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Using technical skills to create illustrative and graphic materials for plan documents and presentations, contribute to the preliminary site design process, and produce construction documents. Such technical skills and technical software skills include: graphic design, hand graphics, technical drawing, AutoCAD, GIS, and illustration that includes maps, 3D models, and renderings.
  • Assisting in the production and coordination of final products, graphics, and presentations.
  • Conducting research and compiling data as required by the project.
  • Completing some administrative aspects of project management on small and mid-size projects (i.e., contract management, status reports, billing reviews, and file management).
  • Writing, formatting, and proof-reading sections of proposals, statements of qualifications, marketing material, and project documents (including editing materials from sub-consultants).
  • Performing site visits as needed.
  • Preparing meeting materials, assembling and setting up outreach supplies, taking notes, and facilitating small group discussions at community meetings (these meetings may occur on weekday nights and weekends).


Ideal candidate will possess the following key qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in landscape architecture. Degree or coursework in urban design or coursework a plus.
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience meeting responsibilities listed above.
  • Demonstrated ability to multi-task with project work and meet stated deadlines.
  • Able to work independently and in a highly collaborative environment with other team members.
  • Experience using AutoCAD for construction document production.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint) and Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Experience with 3-D modeling or visualization.
  • Strong writing abilities, hand drawing skills, graphics skills, and sense of design.
  • Strong critical thinking skills and verbal communication abilities.
  • Familiarity with ESRI ArcGIS and Freehand Illustration are desired, but not required.
