Job Description:

PlaceWorks is seeking a Traffic Intern to provide support to the Environmental Team in our Santa Ana Office. We are looking an intern that is passionate and energetic, deeply committed to providing environmental services, and has a specific interest in traffic engineering and transportation planning. The Environmental Team works collaboratively and across disciplines on projects involving commercial centers, mixed-use development, parks, specific plans, general plans, schools, and infrastructure projects. Our office is fast-paced and engineers/planners may work on several projects at a time.

The primary role of the intern is to support the Environmental Team staff members and project managers by gathering, analyzing, and modeling data for traffic, transportation, and parking studies; and assisting with the preparation of environmental analyses and documentation per the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) and the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) in the areas of transportation and traffic. Project work may include: transportation impact studies, parking management plans, bicycle and pedestrian facility planning and design, and local/regional transportation plans. The ideal candidate will be enrolled in an undergraduate program or Master’s program related to civil or transportation engineering, or urban planning.

This internship provides invaluable work experience and the opportunity to: participate as a member of the Environmental Team; work alongside skilled professionals and leaders of the Company; and build skills/knowledge related to project management, data analysis and modeling, transportation planning and traffic engineering fundamentals, technical writing, and CEQA/NEPA compliance.

Responsibilities Include:

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Conducts traffic and transportation impact analyses (transit, vehicle, bicycle, and pedestrian), and parking demand studies for a wide array of projects using traffic analysis software (Syncro; Traffix/Vistro), and published manuals (HCM; CA MUTCD; Caltrans Highway Design Manual).
  • Gathers, analyzes, and models traffic and transportation data so it can be transformed into a technical report format per the CEQA/NEPA.
  • Conducts research and compiles data as required by the project.
  • Assists with writing, formatting, and proof-reading technical sections of proposals, reports, and project documents with oversight from the project manager or other staff.
  • Generates succinct and informative presentations of technical results in both tabular and graphical formats.
  • Assists other team members with performing site visits as needed.
  • Assists with administrative project tasks to contribute to the successful completion of projects.


  • Currently pursuing a 4-year college degree (Bachelor’s degree) or a Master’s degree in civil or transportation engineering, urban planning, or related field is required.
  • An undergraduate student with no more than one academic year before earning a Bachelor’s degree; a graduate student during first or second year of the Master’s program.
  • At a minimum, must be able to commit to a 5-month internship.
  • Must be able to work at least 15 hours per week.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint) is required.
  • Advanced skills with high-level functions in Excel is required.
  • Knowledge of planning and travel demand modeling programs and traffic analysis is a plus.
  • Must have strong technical writing skills, analytical skills, attention to detail, and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to multi-task with project work and meet stated deadlines.
  • Able to work in a highly collaborative environment with other team members such as planners, urban designers, landscape architects, economists, environmental planners, and other specialists.
