Job Description:

PlaceWorks is seeking a Landscape and Open Space Planning/Design Intern (paid internship) to provide support to the Landscape Architecture Team in the Berkeley Office. We are seeking an intern that is passionate, creative, energetic, and deeply committed to producing design and planning work that shapes and improves communities. The Landscape Architecture Team works collaboratively and across disciplines on projects such as large-scale master plans; streetscape design; trails, open space, and parks design and construction documents; urban greening plans; habitat restoration; and resource planning. We have a strong commitment to sustainable design and planning, and to empowering and improving underserved communities and the natural environment. Our work emphasizes environmental stewardship and community involvement at all times.

The primary role of this Intern is to support the Landscape Architecture Team staff members and project managers on a variety of landscape architecture and open space/resource planning and design projects. This position involves using technical skills to: create illustrative and graphic materials for plan documents and presentations, research and analyze project issues, contribute to the preliminary site design process, produce construction documents, write and format sections of proposals, and assist with community outreach efforts. The ideal candidate will be a second or third year student enrolled in a landscape architecture graduate program.

This internship provides invaluable work experience and the opportunity to: participate as a member of the Landscape Architecture Team; work alongside skilled professionals and leaders of the Company; hone technical software skills; and build other skills related to landscape design, planning, project conceptualization and visioning, project management, proposal and report writing, research, and community outreach.

Responsibilities Include:

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Conducts research and compiles data as required by the project.
  • Writes, edits, lay outs, and produces work products that effectively convey concepts.
  • Assists in the production of final products, graphics, and presentations.
  • Assists with writing, formatting, and proof-reading sections of proposals, statements of qualifications, marketing material, and project documents, with oversight from the project manager or other staff.
  • Assists at community meetings by preparing meeting materials, taking notes, and facilitating small group discussions (these meetings may occur on weekday nights and weekends).
  • Assists with administrative project tasks to contribute to the successful completion of projects.
  • Assists team members with performing site visits as needed.
  • Uses technical skills and technical software skills such as graphic design, hand graphics, technical drawing, AutoCAD, GIS, and illustration that includes maps, 3D models, and renderings that will contribute to the successful completion of projects.
  • Produces construction documents using AutoCAD.


  • A second or third year graduate student currently enrolled in a landscape architecture Master’s program.
  • At a minimum, must be able to commit to a 12-week internship. Must be able to work at least 10 hours per week.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint) is required.
  • Proficiency using specialized applications such as: Adobe Creative Suite (with an emphasis on InDesign and Photoshop) and AutoCAD is beneficial.
  • Able to multi-task with project work and meet stated client-initiated deadlines.
  • Able to work independently and as a member of a highly collaborative environment in partnership with other team members such as planners, urban designers, landscape architects, economists, environmental planners, and other specialists.
  • Hand drawing skills, graphics skills, and sense of design.
  • Strong writing and critical thinking skills.
  • Strong verbal communication skills.
