Job Description:

PlaceWorks is seeking an Intern for our Los Angeles Office, for the Summer and Fall of 2018. To be eligible for this internship, you must be an undergraduate or graduate student enrolled in a program related to urban, regional, environmental or natural resource planning; environmental science; geography; or, GIS. The ideal candidate is passionate, creative, energetic, and engaged in using their skills for the betterment of communities and the environment. Under the guidance of a Project Manager, the intern will support Planning and Environmental Team staff members and project managers by applying planning knowledge and technical skills, and performing site visits/field work, to contribute to a variety of public and private sector planning projects. The project work of our planning practice includes: general and specific plans, master plans, zoning, policy planning, urban revitalization/infill, transportation projects, and local/regional transportation plans, as well as community engagement and environmental review. This internship provides invaluable work experience and the opportunity to: participate as a member of the Planning and Environmental Teams; work alongside skilled professionals and leaders of the Company; and build skills related to project management, planning, technical writing, research, data analysis, environmental compliance, and community outreach.

Responsibilities Include:

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Conducting research as required by project. Analyzing and compiling project research/data, spotting issues, and synthesizing ideas into meaningful outputs/solutions.
  • Assessing site characteristics utilizing desktop GIS, aerial imagery, and online mapping tools such as ArcGIS Online and Google Earth.
  • Assisting other team members with site visits and performing physical site assessments.
  • Conducting research, compiling data, reviewing, analyzing, and assisting in the preparation of California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) and National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) documents.
  • Assisting with writing, formatting, and proof-reading sections of project documents (including editing materials from sub-consultants).
  • Assisting in the production of final products and presentations.
  • Preparing meeting materials, assembling and setting up outreach supplies, taking notes, and assisting with facilitating small group discussions at community meetings (these meetings may occur on weekday nights and weekends).
  • Assisting with administrative project tasks to contribute to the successful completion of projects.

Qualifications:

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in urban, regional, environmental or natural resource planning; environmental science; geography; GIS; or related field.
  • Able to commence internship by May 14, 2018 and commit to a duration of approx. six (6) months.
  • Must be willing to perform site visits in various cities and counties throughout the Southern California area.
  • Have a valid driver’s license, acceptable MVR, and a personal vehicle (to perform site visits).
  • Excellent writing, research, and analytical skills.
  • Strong verbal communication skills.
  • High attention to detail.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint) and Google Earth.
  • Proficiency using Adobe Creative Suite and/or ArcGIS, is a plus.
  • Demonstrated ability to multi-task with project work and meet stated deadlines.
  • Able to work independently and in a highly collaborative environment with other team members.
  • Knowledge of Los Angeles County is a plus.
