Job Description:

PlaceWorks is seeking a Planning Intern (paid internship) to provide support to the Planning Team in our Santa Ana Office and our Ontario Office. We are looking for an intern that is passionate, creative, and energetic, and is deeply committed to providing planning and design services that help shape and improve communities. The Planning Team works collaboratively and across disciplines on projects involving urban infill development, comprehensive planning, visioning, downtown revitalization, transit oriented development, streetscape and parks design, mixed-use development, and large-scale master plans. Our office is fast-paced and planners may work on several projects at a time.

The primary role of the Planning Intern is to support Planning Team staff members and project managers on a variety of public and private sector planning projects. This position involves using planning knowledge and technical skills to prepare documents and presentations, research and analyze project issues, prepare studies and reports, write and format sections of proposals, create maps and graphics, and assist with community outreach efforts. The ideal candidate will be enrolled in an undergraduate program or Master’s program related to planning, architecture, public administration, urban design, or related field.

This internship provides invaluable work experience and the opportunity to: participate as a member of the Planning Team; work alongside skilled professionals and leaders of the Company; and build skills related to project management, planning, project conceptualization and visioning, proposal and report writing, research, and community outreach.

Responsibilities Include:

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Assists with writing, formatting, and proof-reading sections of proposals, statements of qualifications, marketing material, and project documents, with oversight from the project manager or other staff.
  • Uses technical software skills to create graphics and maps that will contribute to the successful completion of project tasks.
  • Edits, lays out, and produces work that effectively convey concepts.
  • Assists in the production of final products, graphics, and presentations.
  • Assists at community meetings by preparing meeting materials, taking notes, and facilitating small group discussions (these meetings may occur on weekday nights and weekends).
  • Conducts research and compiles data as required by the project.
  • Assists with administrative project tasks to contribute to the successful completion of projects.
  • Assists team members with performing site visits, which may include taking photographs, as needed.

Qualifications:

  • Currently pursuing a 4-year college degree (Bachelor’s degree) or a Master’s degree in planning, architecture, public administration, urban design, or related field.
  • An undergraduate student with no more than one academic year remaining before earning a Bachelor’s degree; a graduate student during first or second year of the Master’s program.
  • At a minimum, must be able to commit to a 12-week internship.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint) is required.
  • Proficiency using Adobe Creative Suite is strongly preferred.
  • Knowledge of ArcGIS software, or knowledge of GIS through related coursework is a plus.
  • Demonstrated ability to multi-task with project work and meet stated deadlines.
  • Able to work in a highly collaborative environment with other team members such as planners, urban designers, landscape architects, economists, environmental planners, and other specialists.
