Jean Sweeney Open Space Park

PlaceWorks collaborated with the City of Alameda to complete the first phase of this unique 27-acre community park in the heart of the city. Elements from the site’s previous life as part of the Alameda Belt Line Railway were incorporated into the new park, including a historic train shelter. A large playground mixes conventional play equipment with grass-covered earthforms, boulders, and logs and has already become a popular destination for local families. Nearby, a “great lawn” and picnic pavilion provide spaces for larger gatherings. Sustainability is built into the project with native plants, rain gardens, and repurposed materials from city tree maintenance, creating a memorable destination for Alameda residents and visitors alike. The Cross Alameda Trail, another recent PlaceWorks project, runs through the park, accommodating bike commuters, children walking to school, and other pedestrians and joggers. Together, these projects create numerous recreation and transportation opportunities for the surrounding community.
